The Adoption Process

Southern Sunset Poodles & Doodles

Helpful Tips

  • Research the breed to make sure it is a good match for your household.

  • Sit down with your family and go over expectations, answer any questions they may have, and discuss any reservations anyone may have.

  • Make sure that you are buying/adopting from a reputable breeder or organization who will give you a lot of support and advice.

  • Ask to visit or facetime with your selected pet to solidify your choice.

  • Find your veterinarian and ask for pricing on basic care for your pet.

Let's Get Started!

We passionately match our puppies to suitable, loving furrever homes by carefully following key steps to ensure the perfect match between you and your new furry companion.

Step One

Complete a Puppy Application.

Step Two

Interview: Once you complete the application, we will contact you to discuss your needs and desires for a puppy to ensure we match you with the puppy that fits best into your family.

Step Three

Non-refundable Deposit: Once you decide to adopt a puppy from Southern Sunset Poodles & Doodles, submit a $300 deposit (+7% SC sales tax) through the link on our website or in cash in person to reserve your place on the waiting list for an upcoming litter or to hold a current puppy available for adoption.

Selecting Your Puppy

  • We will contact you soon after the puppies are born to begin the selection process in the order of reservations received.

  • We recommend you begin taking notes on the puppies that interest you, as we hope to help you select your puppy by 6 weeks of age.

  • Our recommendation for your family will be based on notes from our conversations with you.

  • If you determine that none of the puppies in our current litter meet your needs, we can apply your deposit to a future litter.

Important Things to Consider

Before Adding a New Puppy to Your Household

  • Are you committed to taking care of a pet for the duration of their life? Can you fulfill his/her needs in the long-term?

  • Are you prepared to invest, financially, in your pet? Veterinary care, equipment, food, and training can be expensive.

  • Is your home and your family prepared for the arrival of your pet?

  • Do you have the patience for the adjustment period? When your pet arrives, everything is new for them and they need time to settle in.

Benefits of Having a Dog

  1. Provides Social Support, Especially for Young Kids. Having a dog can boost self-esteem and foster a sense of belonging, especially in children and teenagers. Evidence suggests that pet ownership enhances intellectual, emotional and social development in young people.

  2. Eases Stress. Spending time with and petting a dog can reduce anxiety and promote calmness in people.

  3. Teaches Children Responsibility and Empathy. The responsibility of caring for a pet requires focusing your attention on another living being rather than just yourself.

  4. Lessens Allergies in Children. Children who have pets during their first year of life (and are thereby exposed to common allergens) have a lower risk of developing asthma, allergies, and eczema compared to children in pet-free homes. Specifically, having multiple pets like a dog and cat in the house during a child's infancy is vital for building immunity against allergic diseases.

  5. Encourages You to Be More Active. Pet owners get more daily physical activity than non-pet owners. Daily dog walks contribute to this increased activity for dog owners. Dog ownership can lower cholesterol levels in humans, regardless of other lifestyle factors.

  6. Helps You Age Better. Dogs may lower blood pressure, in addition to the other health benefits they provide.
